Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids

Japan and David Sylvian certainly had their critics back in the Eighties. Some adored them and cloned them. Some hated them.Whether you were a fan of the foppish bleached haired post blitz kid look that Mr Sylvian and co adopted or not. There was no doubting their talent. From the early coquetry replicas of the Giorgio Moroder sound with "Life In Tokyo" and Quiet Life" to the later albums such as "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" which was worth the price for "Swing" alone.
Personally I always thought David Sylvian wanted to be a little too much like Bryan Ferry, but when they made tracks like this I almost forgave them.

DirtBox: Bauhaus - Kick In The Eye

Bauhaus - Kick In The Eye

Whatever happened to Pete Murphy?
Bauhaus were one of my favourite bands back in the early Eighties.
Art school punk with a touch of goth thrown in-not that I was ever a goth!? Complete with on stage theatricals.
Always a great band to see live.
They explored new horizons with Kick In The Eye. A funky bass line and punchy beat-what were they thinking?Breaking the sound barrier? (Thanks Maxell)
This is the complete EP "Searching For Satori". Which also includes the tracks Earwax and the reggaefied Harry.
Enjoy!

Cabaret Voltaire - Voice Of America

Ah! Memories of bedsits in Maida Vale! An album I always used to put on when I came in pissed at 4 or 5 in the morning on the stereo hifi next to my bed. Always managed to soothe away the alcohol effect and set me off into a psychedelic dreamland.
More Floyd than the pinkie ones themselves.
A classic eighties album and my personal Cab Vol favourite.

The Disco Files 1973-1978

Anyone who has a keen interest in disco music and it's humble beginnings. Should check out Vince Aletti's book "The Disco Files 1973-1978". A fascinating insight early days of disco.
Something of a trainspotters delight with a weekly list of releases and some personal opinions and assessments of whats big in the clubs and who's who in the world of the discoteque.
More of a chronicle and a reference than a novel but a darn good fascinating read. If like me you are a fanatical black music fan.

Bedroom Bar

Check out the Bedroom Bar here
http://www.bedroom-bar.co.uk/

The Dirt Box is back!
Well I finally got around to finding a venue for the long awaited return of the DB. Although I'm reluctant to call it a reunion - as everyone seems to be doing those these days!
I just like to think of it as a family affair, cos when you look back I guess thats what we were. All close friends connected with other peoples friends and eventually one big happy (well usually) family.
The Bedroom Bar in Shoreditch is the venue I chose for the DB. One - because it is a really nice room which is reminiscent of an old warehouse space and two - because it resides right opposite where we did a Dirt Box many years ago on Rivington Street.
A small sweat box of a place that had a dark and funky basement.
So the area has some association with the history of the club and I suppose the Bank Holiday connection is also a historical Dirt Box occasion. Although theres no sand and sea in Shoreditch!
As you can see from the flyer I've managed to persuade the legendary Jay Strongman to return to the DB decks for this very special event.
Jay, is of course a hollywood celebrity these days, lol!
And can usually be seen on the California coast preachin' the word of rockabilly to the uninitiated West Coast youth.
It's been a long time since Jay and I have DJ'd together and I am looking forward to it immensely. Not absolutely sure what will be in Jays record box (thats if he still plays vinyl these days! Maybe a CD box!!) but, I'm sure it will be one of the highlights of the evening.
Another highlight will be the appearance of my old friend and DJ comrade Ben Boilerhouse.
Ben of course has moved on to much greater stature in life since those heady days of our youth, but I still remember him as a fresh faced aficionado who was a permanent and integral part of the scene back then. And when I was thinking about what DJs to get to play for the DB Ben was really the only candidate after Jay. Although he never played the DB he personified the spirit of the DB with his Boilerhouse clubnights with his partner Andy. So he inclusion is another reason this will be a night to remember.
This of course is all a result of the Facebook group I created last September, when I uploaded a few old photos. The reaction I got was amazing! I never really thought all of you would reappear from the past like that. It's been a constant source of entertainment and joy re-connecting with everyone and it really is fantastic to see how everyone is doing these days.
I know there are quite a few people who are traveling miles for this event - some from the other side of the world. So I know this is going to be very special.
From now on this blog will be the place to come for news and uploads and we have some nice surprises in store for here-so keep a look out!
The facebook group will still continue, but after their announcement the other week about their copyright laws I feel it's time to rethink about sharing what is legitimately our property.
Anyway this will be a place of fun and memories of all kinds ( as well as whats happening today of course)- so I hope you will all contribute here as much as you have on FB.
